4-Hour Supported Scaffold User and Refresher (SCA-201) (SST-305)

This class covers the different types of scaffold that will be used in the field, and some of the reasons they might fail. Members will be taught how to figure weight limits to be placed on scaffolds, how to maintain safe distances from electricity, fall protection, inspections and more. Course duration is 4 hours.

8-Hour Fall Prevention (SST-307)

The information in this course summarizes the key points of OSHAs Fall Protection standard and common citations. Falls are the leading cause of worker fatalities in the U.S. construction industry. Each year, on average, between 150 and 200 workers are killed and more than 100,000 are injured as a result of falls at construction sites. This course looks at some of the hazards and key safety issues related to fall protection. Upon successful completion of this course participants will be able to list the OSHA requirements for materials that acceptable for floor coverings, define and set up an controlled access zone, list spacing and strength requirements for guardrail systems, identify OSHA guardrail violations from jobsite photos, list safety requirements a personal fall arrest system (PFAS) must meet, identify the component parts of a PFAS and demonstrate proper donning techniques, and explain the requirements for safety net systems used as fall protection. Course duration is 8 hours.

16-Hour Rigging Worker (CRA-103)

In this course members will be instructed in how to select, inspect and connect rigging hardware and slings to loads that will be moved on the job. We will cover working safely around cranes and proper hand signals to be used. Course duration is 16 hours.

32 Hour Rigging Supervisor (CRA-301)

This course has been approved through the NYC Department of   Buildings for those Laborers who would like to become certified riggers and signal persons. The course topics are as follows; Basic and Advanced Math for Hoisting and Rigging, Crane Safety, Rigging Hardware and Slings and Signaling. Members must pass both a written and hands on test in order to receive the certification. In order to maintain the certification members will be required to take an 8 hour refresher every 3 years. Course duration is 40 hours.

32-Hour Supported Scaffold Installer & Remover (SCA-102)

This course has been approved through the NYC Department of Buildings for those Laborers who would like to become certified scaffold erectors. The class covers the same topics as the Scaffold User class only in more detail. Members will learn, through hands on instruction, how to safely erect and dismantle frame scaffold systems. Course duration is 32 hours.

Asbestos Awareness

Participants learn where asbestos is found, how asbestos enters and affects the body, the harmful effects on the respiratory system, types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used when removing asbestos, as well as safe work practices. OSHA regulations on asbestos are also discussed. Course duration is 4 hours.

Asbestos Abatement Worker

This course is approved by the EPA for accreditation of Asbestos Abatement Workers in accordance with 40 CFR Part 763, OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1926.1101 and New York State Code Rule 56. Participants receive instruction and hands-on training on work area preparation, decontamination area construction, abatement techniques and clean-up procedures. Participants will also receive in depth training on the proper selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Course duration is 32 hours.

Computer Training

This course is an introduction to computers and the internet. It is designed to assist members in learning how to navigate the World Wide Web, communicate through e-mail and create basic documents, and more. Course duration is 4 hours.

Concrete Placement Awareness

Participants will discuss site preparation for concrete placement, consolidation (vibration), and concrete finishing and curing. Tool identification and job site safety procedures will also be covered. Course duration is 4 hours.

Confined Space Awareness

Participants learn how to identify and recognize potential hazards associated with confined-space entry. The course covers the characteristics of confined spaces and permit required confined spaces, hazardous atmospheres, pre-entry testing, physical hazards, confined space entry teams and personal protective equipment (PPE). Course duration is 4 hours.

Construction Math I & II

Members will learn reading rulers, grade evaluation, decimal and metric, engineering ruler, decimal and inch conversions, squaring principles and quantity calculations. Participants will learn how to calculate concrete and asphalt.Course duration is 4 hours each.

Crystalline Silica Awareness

As construction workers we can be exposed to silica dust from common workplace operations such as cutting, sawing, drilling and chopping concrete, rock and stone products. Members will learn about the health effects of exposure to Crystalline Silica and how to protect themselves. Course duration is 4 hours each.

Defensive Driver (NSC)

Through this class you will learn to become a more considerate and defensive driver. You can receive both a point reduction for your NY State driver’s license (up to 4 points) as well as 10% reduction on your liability, no-fault and collision premiums. This course is available, at no cost, to both you and your immediate family. Course duration is 6 hours.

Electric Power Tools

Participants will be instructed on the proper use of electrical tools as well as the hazards associated with them. Some of the tools discussed are rotary/hammer drills, grinders, hand drills, circular saws and reciprocating saws. Working with electricity safely is also covered in this course. Course duration is 4 hours.

EPA Lead Abatement Worker

This course is taught in accordance with 40 CFR Part 745.226 and TSCA Section 402 and is required for those members who will be working on bridges and subways where there are high lead levels due to the removal of lead paint from the structural steel. The topics covered include health effects, lead regulations, personal protective equipment (PPE), site safety, sampling methods, residential/Housing of Urban Development (HUD) inspections and risk assessment, residential and HUD work practices, abatement methods and disposal procedures, hazard communication and the legal rights of workers. Course duration is 16 hours.

EPA Lead Abatement Worker Refresher

This is a compressed version of the 16-hour initial course and is required to maintain your certification. Any changes in the regulations or new abatement methods will also be discussed. Course duration is 8 hours.

Ergonomics

Participants learn about the principles of ergonomics and their applications. They will learn about the proper use of equipment, tools, and machine controls. Use good work practices, including proper lifting techniques. They are taught to recognize the early symptoms of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD’s) before serious injuries develop. Course duration is 4 hours.

FDNY Certificate of Fitness Prep Class

Help with the Fire Department of New York’s Certificate of Fitness test requirements. These three courses help prepare members to take the FDNY examinations for Fire Guard for Torch Operations and Construction Site (F-60), Torch Use of Flammable Gases for Hot Work Operations (G-60) and Supervision of Portable Fueled Space Heaters at Construction Sites (S-92). Course duration is 4 hours.

First Aid/CPR/AED

The purpose of the American Red Cross (ARC) First Aid/CPR/AED program is to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. This course teaches participants the skills necessary to give immediate care to a suddenly ill or injured person until medical help arrives. Course duration is 8 hours.

Flagger-Traffic Control Training (National Safety Council)

Participants are instructed on the proper procedures for stopping, slowing and releasing traffic. Different methods of communication for two person flagging operations, high visibility clothing, and location of flagger stations, proper equipment and hand signals are discussed. Course duration is 4 hours.

Hazard Communication

Members are provided with information on the major provisions of the OSHA Hazard Communication Program, including the scope of the standard, program requirements, and employer/employee rights and responsibilities. Course duration is 4 hours.

Hazardous Waste Worker (HAZWOPER)

This course meets all OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 and 29 CFR 1926.65 requirements and is mandatory for all workers involved in hazardous waste cleanup. The program prepares participants to work safely and productively on hazardous waste remediation projects. Special emphasis is placed on following proper procedures and developing safe work habits in areas such as dress-out, soil sampling, material handling, and decontamination procedures. In order to maintain this certification you must attend an 8 hour refresher course annually. Course duration is 45 hours.

Hazardous Waste Worker (HAZWOPER) Refresher

This course meets all OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 and 29 CFR 1926.65 requirements and is mandatory for all workers who completed the initial 45 hour Hazardous Waste Worker. It must be taken every year in order to maintain the certification. Course duration is 8 hours.

Hoisting and Rigging (NYC DOB)

This course has been approved through the NYC Department of Buildings for those Laborers who would like to become certified riggers and signal persons. The course topics are as follows; Basic and Advanced Math for Hoisting and Rigging, Crane Safety, Rigging Hardware and Slings and Signaling. Members must pass both a written and hands on test in order to receive the certification. In order to maintain the certification members will be required to take an 8-hour refresher every 3 years. Course duration is 40 hours.

Lead Awareness

Trainees review health hazards associated with lead, how lead enters and affects the body. The trainees also learn the type of PPE to use for lead removal and how to protect themselves from lead exposure. OSHA regulations on lead are also reviewed. Course duration is 4 hours.

MTA Track Safety

The MTA teaches this course at the MTA NYC Transit Learning Center in Brooklyn. You must come in person to the union to register for this class. Course duration is 8 hours.

New Member Orientation

Members will be given an introduction to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, safety requirements, training opportunities, and union benefits. Course duration is 4 hours.

Northeast Gas Association (NGA) - Gas 40/70/71

These courses are intended for people who will be working around natural gas. They describe best industry practices for excavation and backfill damage prevention. Participants will also learn about the components of natural gas, ignition range of natural gas and how to recognize and react to abnormal operating conditions. Course duration is 4 hours.

OSHA 10- and 30-Hour Safety & Health

We provide members with information on the contents of OSHA Standards to fulfill OSHA’s Training Requirements. Courses include Introduction to OSHA; the Focus Four hazards (fall, electrical, caught in between and struck by). Other topics include excavation, stairways and ladders, scaffold, confined space, tools, hazard communication and ergonomics. Course duration is 10 & 30 hours.

PCB Awareness

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) refers to a class of synthetic organic chemicals that have been widely used as additives to oils in electrical equipment, hydraulic equipment as well as other applications. Members are taught how to identify and protect themselves from harmful exposure while handling PCB’s. Course duration is 4 hours. 

Pneumatic Tools Operation

Members learn how to identify different types of air compressors, inspection and starting procedures. Members will also learn how to identify different type of air tools that will be used in the field. The use of PPE, back safety and proper lifting techniques will also be discussed. Course duration is 4 hours.

Print Reading for Heavy Commercial Construction

This course provides print reading knowledge related to commercial construction, including site work, mechanical and electrical systems, structural steel, reinforced concrete, and finish construction. The textbook covers the skills needed to interpret plans and print reading symbols commonly included on prints for large commercial structures. The textbook also provides updated information on the National Electric Code (NEC), LEED® certification, and CSI MasterFormat™. Expanded topics include public and private project owners, surveying, underground utility location, slip forms, building automation, and interior trim. Course duration is 40 hours.

Railroad Worker Safety Training

AMTRAK, L.I.R.R. and Metro North all provide their own track training courses. AMTRAK and Metro North are computer based learning and the L.I.R.R. class is Instructor led learning. All three courses are taught at our training facility. Course duration is 4 hours (each class).

Roadway Safety Awareness

This course covers 13 common hazards in highway and road construction projects including electrical hazards, fall hazards, flagger safety, health hazards, night work, noise hazards, operator safety, working outdoors, run overs and back overs and more. Course duration is 8 hours.

Scaffold Safety and Training (NYC DOB)

This course has been approved through the NYC Department of Buildings for those Laborers who would like to become certified scaffold erectors. The class covers the same topics as the Scaffold User class only in more detail. Members will learn, through hands on instruction, how to safely erect and dismantle frame scaffold systems. Course duration is 32 hours.

Small Gas Engine

Members will learn about the different tools and equipment that will be used on the job site that are powered by gas engines. The difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines will be discussed. We will also discuss the importance of inspecting and maintaining the equipment as well as safety. Course duration is 4 hours.

Trench Protection

This course will provide information on the causes and dangers of cave-ins and how to inspect and protect yourself. We will discuss the different types of soil classifications and the shoring and benching systems available for preventing those cave-ins. Course duration is 4 hours.

Water & Sewage Piping Installation

This course is intended to provide participants with a basic understanding of these systems, their different parts, and how they transfer clean and waste water. The course discusses how these systems are built, tested and repaired safely. Course duration is 16 hours.
